There’s a passage in Clarice Lispector’s final book describing the way normal things, like a slice of fruit on a naked table, can become something else, like a laughing face, and this reminded me of the way I approach my practice. I make paintings to point toward these weird phenomena that seem to hide in plain sight, or at least are left out of how we make sense of the world. Lispector describes the way we ignore these visions as “the pacification of fear, the denial of fear - in a word, civilization.” By painting these visions, it is my aim to uncivilize fear.
